A fish head and a pair of crossed fingers — two drawings that weren't for a cover, a client or a deadline. One is dated 2002. Nobody wrote down the year of the other.
No matter where his career took him — publishing, CBS, film and television — Richard remained, at his core, an artist. He worked the way some people breathe: constantly, instinctively, with no separation between life and creation.
Most of what he made was made for something. A jacket, a sleeve, a client, a deadline. These two weren't, or at least nothing in the records says they were — a fish head and a pair of crossed fingers, one from 2002 and one from a year nobody wrote down. They are the drawing with nothing asked of it.
